for one, they come up with them, and they (the statistics) are not all as useless as you might think. If you were contemplating the development and marketing of a revolutionary new pea-based food for instance, you might be extremely interested to know how many peas each of us eats on average every year.

Do I know any? yes, loads.

I often wonder if the researchers get truthful or considered answers to their questions. Particularly when they stop people in the street who are in a hurry.
