USB leads

Something that's puzzling me........

A USB lead used to connect a digital camera/mp3 player etc to a PC has a small connector on one end. Why is it then that the other (PC) end is full size?

Why not have both ends the same small size????

Only a guess but on the PC they are all to a standard size that is large enough to allow for as many connections as may be needed.

Each piece of hardware only needs to be large enough to contain its own configuration of leads?
