I think a combination approach works best. First use a well protected router with hardware firewall and at least WPA2 encryption and a strong password, then a good up to date browser. (I use Chrome) Couple that with a good Adblocker (adblock for chrome) Then use a proprietary security suite I use MSE with real time protection switched on.
Then add a couple of stand alone malware programes, I use malwarebytes and super anti spyware. use these to scan at regular intervals in conjunction with Ccleaner. Do regular backups, I use Acronis and take a disk image every month after the monthly windows updates, plus I back up all of my documents music and pictures to a large capacity USB thumb drive.
I know you can never say never, but in 40 years of computing I have never had a virus and have never lost or had data corrupted due to a virus. Plus all of the programs I have listed are free I have never paid for security software it is unnecessary.
It goes without saying obviously, don't click on links in unsolicited emails and stay away from porn, and most people will never have a problem!
