An excellent idea, in principle, which will "be paid for by a levy on banks".

And guess who the banks will pass that levy on to.

Or am I just an old cynic?

No, you're not cynical, CiG.

I believe that it's simply an electioneering soundbite.

Or am I just being cynical too?

LOL

this may encourage banks to be even more irresponsible with people's money. Why you'd ever want to keep £100,000 in one bank anyway is beyond me...

"Why you'd ever want to keep £100,000 in one bank anyway is beyond me..."

According to reports, at least one couple kept £1,000,000 in Northern Rock.

More money than sense?

It's a pity that the pensions fiasco was/is not treated in the same way perhaps!.

  DrScott 14:40 22 Sep 2007

the million was from the sale of a house and being reserved for another, but still, all in one account?! Utterly ridiculous.

The pensions fiasco could never have been guaranteed in the same way, since it was the government that precipitated the disaster in the first place. It would an admission of guilt, and we all know that the current incumbents are the first to avoid taking any responsibility for anything.
