Saturday Morning

  laurie53 09:20 08 Dec 2007

I was just thinking of Saturday mornings in general.

Anyone else remember working Saturday mornings?

Yes, I know lots of folk still work Saturdays, Sundays too, but it used to be the norm.

8 - 1 and then straight to the sports stadium of your choice, or onto the bus/train for home if you were between 18 and 25.

We actually went to school on Saturday mornings too, but that was unusual, even then.

The good old days eh?

I used to hate working Saturdays in the 80's.
But these days with shops open 7 days i quiet like having 2 days off in the week.
I now do shifts that can be 3/4/5 on & 3/4/5 off.

Working 7 days a week,12 hours a day plus more or less sometimes. Lovely Jubbly.Didn't do me much harm, and I still had some spare time for socialising and other activities. How did I ever manage it?.

Yes we did 48 hours a week when I first left school at 14 and got a job. 07.30 until 17.00 hrs. five days a week (an hour off for dinner) Saturday straight through from 07.30 until 13.00 hrs. Wages were 28 shillings a week, mum got the pound and the other eight bob was squandered away on high living. We lived high off the hog in those days. After three and a half years I was getting a whole two pounds for the same hours. Joined the Bootneck family and immediately went back down to twenty eight shillings a week.

Three shift working Mon - Friday
7 to 1 Saturday and again Sunday was my normal working times for over 25 years until I change jobs. Now its officially "9 - 5" Mon - Fri job, but often I will be working all hours to make a deadline.

Although a house husband now, for just over 22 years I worked 5 out of 7 (as its now called).
In retail you have to get used to working at the busiest times, which also included alot of late nights, including Saturdays.
I remember looking forward to my days off in the week, and Sunday hours, because I finished at 4pm.
My wife moans about working 9 till 5, mon - fri, I wish I had had it so good, lol!.

I am working as we speak. Finish just after 4 - oh woe is me. Still break up a week on Tuesday until 5 Jan, so not all bad!

When I was at medical school it didn't make much difference what day it was - we were working - often seven days a week and 20+ hours a day. Not good for the soul, the patients or anything else.
