Prospect of nuclear powered merchant ships.

The time is right for nuclear powered merchant ships to appear, according to Babcock Marine spokesman David Dobson. They would be especially beneficial for LNG ships in particular, and could possibly allow passage through the North East Passage without a Russian icebreaker clearing the way up in front.

Among other advantages, there would be quicker voyages and more friendly ones from an environmental perspective, as the noxious gases emitted from current main marine engines would be gone. TC. click here

The world's first nuclear powered commercial ship, the "Savannah", was launched in '59, so it's hardly a new concept.
