Preserving web history?

I came across this little story that gave me pause for thought.

Are old web pages worth preserving? Would anyone be seriously interested in previous incarnations of the PCA website? I always thought that once something had been released onto the web it could never truly be eradicated, and would lurk on somewhere, somehow in some forgotten archive or corner of an overlooked backup. Turns out I was wrong. Things DO vanish.

So what do you think? is this virtual archeology a serious undertaking? or are old websites not worth the paper they aren't printed on?

There's already an archive at the link below. Some sites work better than others. In the archived PCA there's some 'amazing' specs on machines from yore.
