PC will be the entertainment hub - Bill Gates

  TOPCAT® 18:57 23 Jan 2005

First part of an interview in which Bill Gates plots a Windows future.

"People don't want lots and lots of single purpose devices..." he says, but others may think differently on this.

Any opinions from the illustrious forum? TC.

is my reaction to this. My opinion is that people want a TV to be a TV, and a computer to be just that. I have no intention, now or in the future, to connect my computer to my TV or my Hi-Fi, or to buy a combined computer/TV.

I may be wildly wrong, but I see very little in the way of a future for all-in-one entertainment hubs, or anything resembling them.

There, I've put my head on the block. I hope my words don't come back to haunt me.

Yes, I'm in agreement with that Mr Forum Editor, and now there's two heads on the block! :o) TC.

Yes I read that article with some disbelief myself TC.

I am in total agreement with the FE, so they can cart us off to the guillotine together!

I do watch streaming video (mostly news) on my PC. I also have the ability to watch DVDs if I wish - but apart from verifying that this works, I have never watched one.

I wouldn't dream of installing a TV card either. If I want to watch TV there are three of us at home and there are three tellies to choose from.

This PC is used for surfing, word processing, Excel and a few other things. My other entertainment comes from separate, stand-alone, equipment. And long may this remain the case.

I like many other users already have tv on our computers probably because we spend more time on them than sitting watching tv.Also music, dvd etc are already on computers and the add ons can only increase so he is probably right

Also you have to bear in mind most schools have computers and the pupils have them at home and I think his comments are probably based regarding the younger generation (nothing personal guys)

Multi-purpose tools are never as good as the specialist tool

He's having a Laff. MS have started down this road and are getting desperate for people to follow them.
I'll keep my TV as a TV thanks

I too believe you are wrong.

I actually watched that interview @ 4.30 this morning.

I would love an all in one so to speak.

Has decided this is the way to go and he is no fool.

Then again neither was Sir Clive Sinclair of C4 fame :o)
