Isn't the Atlantic a big enough playground?
Have they heard of radar?

Radar doesn't work underwater...

The MOD has said that there may have been a problem with the Sonar...

Well, I've always said there's nothing more dangerous than a British matelot with a gun. But of course there is. "A French matelot with a gun" Put the two together and Bingo/Viola"

P.S. My spell checker is no good with French words either...

  newman35 11:19 16 Feb 2009

Correction accepted - mind you it seems sonar was equally effective as radar might have been!!

I somehow doubt that the subs would have been charging around with no sonar.

What it does show, though, is just how good the subs are at keeping very, very quiet so that the enemy can't find them either!

  wiz-king 13:04 16 Feb 2009

It's 'cos they drive on the wrong side of the wave!

I wouldn't be surprised if they were running silent shadowing each other in the depths and failed to keep a safe distance apart. The fact that Vanguard was towed back to Faslane might mean some propeller or rudder damage occurred.

I don't reckon we'll get to see photos of its stern though as that bit is usually very top secret. ;o) TC.

The BBC 'correspondent came up with a great solution on the lunch time news.

She effective said the navy should make the boats more visible to other vessels sonar.

Just what the crew of a nuclear equipped sub would want!!!

This could loose the Captain or XO their jobs.
Depending who had control & was on the bridge at the time.

Both running in stealth mode shows how quiet the modern sub really is.
Most radar operators would listen for the noise of the propulsion of the french sub.

Expect heads to roll over this!
