Missing Pond Fish

  numskull 12:11 12 Jul 2010

Pond fish keep disappearing! Don't think it is a Heron as surely it would take all of them? Some seem to have sores on their sides as if something has tried to take a chunk.
Any suggestions?

stick an infra-red red camera and see if it gets caught on film

Meow! or fox perhaps, make pond have at least 6" high steep banks.

Keeps missing it's target.

Course fishing started last month. Maybe you've got some anglers sneaking in ;)

'stick an infra-red red camera and see if it gets caught on film'..just the thing most people have lying about.

Rooks seem to enjoy a tasty frog plucked from the edge of my pond and I have seen them try (but fail) to take the smaller fish. They do not have the patience of the heron.

I have seen a heron take one fish and I am sure he/she has taken others too. I now use floating heron guards and they seem to do the trick.

Got a decoy heron at the side of the pond. Hasn't made any difference!

netting from DIY shed stretched just over the surface.
Of your this is assuming this is a pond visitor and not someone/thing already resident- a renegade snapping terrapin for example.

There are toads in the pond. No snapping terrapins that I have seen

I don't suppose that you have a renegade Gnome with a fishing rod...?
