If you buy a house in Cardiff its about £290K. The exact same model in Newport is about £200k. For a distance of 15 miles thats some difference.

Anyone out there spotted any other markups?

Perhaps Cannucks Washing Machine was marked up for the Cardiff Market?

Market forces - two words, but the most powerful of all in a free-market economy.

If lots of people want to live in a certain location, and new house-building is limited by land shortages, planning restrictions, or both, the price of a house in that location will be higher than in another town, one that isn't so attractive as a place in which to live.

Property prices can vary significantly even within an area of a couple of miles. Within my location and an area of a radius of two and a half miles, the price range of property can vary from one hundred and fifty thousand sterling to just over one and a quarter million sterling.

Within the last three years, we have had property developers who have bought 'lower price' range property, demolished them, then rebuilt new at well over four times the old value. Building land and the 'select area' being main commodity.

here in staines go 9 miles west 50% plus for houses as its windsor or weybridge to the south because its posh and sought after.

go 3 miles east a big drop because its stanwell & feltham where no one wants made up mostly of bad housing and crime.
