Just as a matter of interest, in a recent thread re the LHC I mentioned a sci-fi story I recalled from long ago which I have now traced, "Brooklyn Project" by William Tenn. Similar sort of experiment. Don't say I didn't warn you...

I'm sure it will work.

It's not easy to grasp the sheer scale of this machine, which is the most complex ever built. It has millions of components and frankly it would have been a miracle of scientific and engineering technology if it had worked flawlessly, straight out of the box.
