Labour have confirmed they will not contest the by-election forced by the ex-shadow home secretary David Davis.

Is this good or bad for Labour?

If the stand against then they admit he has a case.

If all other parties don't contest, then he looks an idiot for resigning.

Spot on - but the 'Sun' will rescue us all by fielding Mr McKenzie.

Total waste of OUR money - Davis was elected for a term, he should see it through without causing us all to put our hands in our pockets to pay for this imbecilic 'hustings', just for his own vanity.

Of course they didn't stand - his majority is far too big. Only a LibDem candidate could have beaten him, which is why he phoned Nick Clegg the night before he announced his intention of resigning to ensure they wouldn't run against him.

The Question was is this good or bad for Labour?

Very, very good. His views go against the majority of public opinion, and his actions make him look a bit silly.

A prominent Tory looking like a prat.
Of course its good for Labour, by not standing they totally dismiss him.

  newman35 19:46 18 Jun 2008

What else is there to be concerned about??
The constituency had a representative already, he didn't 'give up to do something else', just wants to call an election for his own vanity.
Ridiculous - should get on being a people's representative (for which he is already elected!).

Perhaps the Sun will foot the bill and make the whole thing a circus act and add to the idea that politics is a total waste off time.

How many of potential voters are already saying that they are all as bad as each other so what is the point of going to vote at all.
