With your background I thought that you were going to mention kite flying onboard HM Ships. Kites made of odd scraps alleviated the boredom of Beira Patrol.

in admitting someone is far, far better at flying kites than me. But I bet they don't enjoy fish and chips as much as we did afterwards.

Woolwell. Only did one commission (in 23 yrs) on board HMS Ceylon for two and a half years, as was the practice then.. Never ever saw anyone with a kite in that time. We did release the occasional weather balloon or that's what I thought it was at the time. I've been out with my own children and tried to fly kites and failed. Been out with my grand children and failed. Been out with my great grand children and also failed. So I have given up hope.
