Enriched uranium is a critical component of both nuclear power stations and nuclear weapons. Low enriched uranium is used for power stations and high enriched for weapons. Iran has been steadily moving towards the capability of producing nuclear weapons. Nuclear power stations were the first step.
Nuclear power stations provide more than just plutonium for weapons. Tehran have claimed that they need reactors to produce caesium for medical research - a perfectly justifiable for nuclear by-products. And frankly, if this and power generation was there only intent, there would be no reason to stop them from building reactors and uranium centrifuge cascades.
Unfortunately, the common opinion is that Iran also want to build nuclear weapons. I sincerely hope this is not the Iranian government's intent. Sadly, it probably is. There's no reason to enrich uranium to over 4% - 5% if all you want to do is produce power and medical use isotopes, so centrifuge cascades producing 20% can only mean they're on the road to one thing.....
In a lot of respects, Iran is right to build power stations. With the best will in the world, their oil will only last for so long, and just like the UK, energy security is probably high up on their priorities list. But all the politically motivated posturing with the UN and 'the west' will certainly lead to military strikes in the heart of Iran, and a great deal of pain for their population.
If Iran was truly developing its enriched uranium production for peaceful means there would be no need to go to the expense of hiding everything away inside a mountain.
It has been estimated that Iran now has enough uranium isotope U-235 to make five nuclear bombs. United nations weapons inspectors are now back in Iran, and that, coupled with the fact that the sanctions imposed by the west are starting to seriously affect the Iranian economy is going to ramp up the tension.
There was a series of programs on BBC2 television recently about Putin, Russia and the rest of the World (Putin, Russia & the West). In the main it was how the USA, Russia were exchanging intelligence and other information, and acting on same, with other countries.
There appeared to be some arguments about what Iran was doing. It was only when the USA, eventually produced some photographs and other evidence, that Russia as now had to have a rethink?.
