That photograph is possibly earlier than it looks. There is no sign of the railway to Portland which was in operation in 1902.

The area of enclosed water in the foreground was filled in and was the site of the naval air station. It is now the base for the Olympic sailing events.

It is also where Sunseekers are going to build a new boatyard, Fortuneswell is further onto portland it looks like it was taken from the hairpin bend at the top of the hill where the monument to the portland stone miners is now.
