This is a genuine unidentified one – so even I do not know where it is - maybe all the ex-matelots can crack this one?

I haven't a clue really, but I will have a guess at Chatham. Or maybe it's Sarfend-on-Sea?
I'm off to bed now before you come up with more ...

Yes , I initially thought Southend but I think this is a major dock on a river.

On a river with a bridge in the background. Pool of London?

The tower may be the significant part that Jack-me-Hearty may recognise. The occasion may have been the start of a ship's cutter race. If we don't get the answer, I will send it to the "Navy News" because they run a competition in recognising old ships in every monthly issue. With a bigger readership than here, someone could well come up with the occasion.

Cheers mate.

The caption says "South End" rather than Southend implying that it's the south end of of a dock that runs north/south.
Still don't know where it is though.

Not liverpool.
It's too narrow.

  ashdav 23:07 29 Aug 2008

My guess (and it's only a guess) is Portsmouth.Around 1910

The significance of the wording wasn't lost on me - during the seaman's strike in 1966 the ship I was on was moored off Southend for 10 days whilst the ships carrying perishable cargoes were allowed up river.
Just imagine, being able to see, hear and smell the 'fleshpots' of Southend and not being able to go ashore after sailing from Australia without a landfall..... I could go on....

I bet you were a bit ripe yourself !
