There's no doubt that if they are used in the right way large data archives can be very helpful - you can often see patterns in big datasets that aren't apparent if you work with smaller samples.

Ultimately it will all depend on how good the government is at converting ideas into action, especially if the action involves spending public money. Compared to the potential for social reward the £20,000 prize fund is laughably small.

I do feel that this is the government admitting that all they have no idea what to do with all the "essential" data they've collected...
