I cannot find the exact date, but there is an awful lot of information on Wikipedia about UK Motorways and also introduction and enforcement of speed limits.

Apparently the first speed camera to be switched on in the UK, was on the 22nd May 1992. That was on the A316 at Twickenham Bridge in Surrey and was set at 60mph even though the limit there at the time was 40mph?.

So I would imagine that it would be after 1992?.

I didn't take that story from Wikipedia, but used an article from cars.uk.msn.com/news/speed-cameras-are-20-years-old-today

The web, for once, appears to have let us down.
