My wife doesn't just limit the technique to just computers. Anything that moves, including me, gets the same treatment if it doesn't do what she thinks it should.

Going back to the dawn of Micro computers, the most effective treatment for recalcitrant devices was the 'Bruce Drop'
Simply close down, disconnect all.
Hold the the machine about 50cm above a pile carpet.
Then let go.
It went with a gentlest of thuds - and when restarted - Worked - most of the time.
