Cars Cubed

  realist 21:59 31 Jul 2006

There's a new worrying trend in car thefts in my town in the South East. Don't know, it may also be happening elsewhere. Thieves are targetting older cars for their now enhanced scrap value.

What happens is you innocently leave your car parked up in some side street while shopping or at work. Along comes Mr Car Thief and friends to winch your car up onto a low-loader and off it goes never to be seen again.

What is motivating these crimes is the high prices being paid for scrap materials in the Far East. The cars are "cubed" and shipped off to the docks in container trucks.

My near neighbour's old but much loved Peugeot 106 was taken this way last week. She heard the alarm but by the time she was alerted the car was already gone. Others saw it being pulled on to a low-loader. They are so brazen, and passers-by assume your car's being repossessed or has broken down. The local Police were not the slightest bit interested except to give out a crime number.

HondaMan 09:53 01 Aug 2006 scam a few years back where some guy arranged for his Porsche to be stolen. He naturally claimed back on his insurance. The car was then broken and he bought all the bits and, lo and behold, he had his original car back PLUS the insurance payout. Worked very well until somebody said something in the local pub and a nice gentleman who wore a blue serge suit to work overheard and did some digging!

Upshot, the insurance co got their several thousand back, he lost his car - proceeds of a crime - and he went to jail.
