Can anyone identify this flower?

Whilst in France earlier this month I visited the botanical gardens of the Bishops Palace in Limoges.

I took a picture of a bee happily feeding on a flower. Does anyone know the name of this flower?.

Here is the picture;

Looks just like the thistles in our back garden.

Stuartli: You are correct, thanks. My knowledge of botany is zero; my wife was interested so we visited the garden.

I found this picture of a Globe Thistle;

Soul mates then..:-)

The ones you saw appear to be the Blue Thistle as in my link.

Both pictures look pretty much the same to me. May be at different stages of development? So maybe we should call it a Blue Globe Thistle.
