Surprising this hasn't been discussed here, first signs of break down of a discontented society?

When was the last time we had any riots?

And here was me thinking he was returning home as he had run out of money after giving such a large tip to his Italian waitress.

"first signs of break down of a discontented society?"

That's an over-dramatic assessment of what is an outbreak of civil disorder. Admittedly it's a very nasty outbreak, but it's important not to fall into the trap of allowing the media hype to carry you away. What happened in Brixton in South London, and in several other UK cities and towns during the Spring and Summer of 1981 was just as bad, if not worse.

We survived all that, and we'll survive this.

This was taken from a post by FE on another thread

Since 1985 the estate - and Tottenham in general - has undergone something of a transformation in terms of crime. In the last three months of 1985 there were 875 burglaries on Broadwater Farm; in the same period last year there were 30. Unemployment in Tottenham is now almost half what it was then.

There is a connection.
