BBC Sailors

Just been watching a series called Sailor.

It seems to be mostly about Officers on the Ark Royal.

As far as I am concerned Officers are not sailors.

I was a sailor, joined in 1951 and finished my contract in 1961.

'As far as I am concerned Officers are not sailors.' they are pilots then?

The BBC Sailor program was shown in the 1970's.
With Rod Stewart's song as it's music feature.
His song was then adapted by the Navy for the sail down the South Atlantic in 82.

Officers(ruperts) can be seaman officers, engineers, logistcs, pilots/observers & medical etc.

Never understood why the senior service is known as the andrew?
Anything to do with the duke of york??

"Never understood why the senior service is known as the andrew?"
As defined in Rick Jolly's excellent book 'Jackspeak':
"Nothing to do with HRH Commander The Duke of York [...] but said to be named after Lieutenant Andrew Miller, a highly successful press-gang officer of the 18th century."

GANDALF <|:-)>. No, they are Royal Navy Officers.

They don't run the ship. They are like Managers, but it is the workers (sailors) who do the work.

"So being a manager isn't work?"

lol no it isnt, judging by the managers iv been under.

I suppose it is just the old them and us thing that you get in most walks of life.I would be more willing to take pj123 word on this one, at least he has been in the navy and so I assume he knows what he is talking about.

  hereford456 16:23 21 Aug 2007

Understand now!
To be honest the Royals are the only real force on a ship.
Apart from CPO Regulator who is never one to argue with!

  Jim Thing 16:48 21 Aug 2007

Oh no! You and Bingalau both unfrocked bootnecks? I'm in danger of being outnumbered here...

Seriously, is a Regulating CPO still addressed as Master? Or is that reckoned to be bad for everyone else's self-respect these days?

A member of my family was in the Merchant Navy as a junior officer - his duties as an engineer were in the main engine room.

F.M. I don`t know if you have been in the navy or not but I haven't and so am more than willing to take pj123 word for it.
