In an article in this months Saga magazine there is a bit that says that '9 out of 10 British adults can't identify a Holly tree'! I don't know how true this is but its not hard, they are rather prickly!!
As Fruit Bat says its the lack of general knowledge these days, as evident from some of the TV quiz programmes.
I happened to see the Twitter page recently of a teenager bemoaning her poor performance in her GCSEs. Her Tweet count was in excess of 30,000. Perhaps if she had put as much time into her studies as she spends Tweeting she would have done better.
