AM, PM 12 O’clock, Debate?

  Blackhat 16:47 03 Nov 2007

My PA was confirming an appointment the other day for 12 noon; she asked ‘is that am or pm’ I hesitated as I wasn't sure.

I thought I would try to clarify this with a bit of research, there seems to be a problem with 12 o’clock.

My question is, what would you say, off the cuff, if asked if 12 noon was am or pm?

The day starts at 0:00, which means that it is AM.

12:00 is the beginning of the 2nd half of the day, and therefore PM.

Unless you are Count Drac or on the game it would be highly unlikely that a meeting would be scheduled for midnight.

You don't need am or pm if you are using a 24 hour clock.

0900 is in the morning. 2100 is in the evening.

1200 is midday and 0000 is midnight.

Nobody says "I'll meet you at 09:30 if they really mean 21:30"

09:30 is half past nine in the morning and 21:30 is half past nine in the evening.

It is neither. AM is "ante meridium" (before noon) and PM is "post meridium" (after noon). This is why you say 12 noon rather 12 am or pm. Midnight is similar.

I just read the links and realised that I am just repeating what they say.

I use the 24 hour clock, everything is clear and there's no confusion, just a matter of interest there's no such thing as 00:00 hours it's either 23:59 or 00:01 we had to record signals as such, I believe the police do the same as well, I've no idea why, I was just told that's the way we do things so I'm none the wiser.

and that's about it - no possibilty of confusion.

..that she said "noon". I have never ever mistaken noon for midnight.
