Zone alarm missing zpy.dll

  Doug29 21:04 05 Nov 2006

I was having problems with my e-mail using thunderbird. I shutdown Zone Alarm and the problem disappeared. I uninstalled and then tried a reinstall. I keep getting the following:

vsmon.exe - unable to locate component
This application has failed to start because zpy.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

I have tried re-installing Zone alarm but get the same message every time.

I would appreciate it if somebody could give me some advice.

Also tried a system restore which didn't help

Thanks brundle. I will give it a go.

From the link above I don't have a zauninst.exe line to change

"C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe"

presumably because you cant install zone alarm to put the shortcuts back right?
it's possible the uninstall program is still present anyway.
goto start menu/run, paste the whole line in with quotes as shown and hit return

“C:\Program Files\Zone Labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe” /clean

another system restore to replace the missing files might help, you have a bit of a catch22 at the mo as you know, left over bits of zonealarm preventing you reinstalling it so you can remove it completely...

another option is to get the missing .dll from click here and put it in the zonealarm program folder and see if that helps on reboot, or use the msconfig startup tab to disable any zonealarm components that are set to start automatically with windows

Thank you brundle and skidzy for your help. Didn't realise it was a dodgy update. Thought something was wrong with the PC.

Did a system restore to about three weeks ago.
Added the zpy.dll file and then pasted in “C:\Program Files\Zone labs\ZoneAlarm\zauninst.exe” /clean.
Deleted all remaining traces of Zonelabs using explorer.
Downloaded and installed Zone alarm.

Bobs your Aunties live-in lover. Don't have to rely on Bill Gates for dodgy security now.

Thanks again
