Zone Alarm alternatives

  Peverelli 22:30 13 May 2004

I'm fed up with Zone Alarm's TrueVector Service continually crashing my computer so have decided to try out a different firewall.
Can anybody recommend a free, effective and stable alternative.

Many thanks in advance.

I would highly recommend Kerio Personal Firewall 4 on a 30 day trial period. It will revert to the Freeware version 2.0 afterwards, unless version 4 is purchased. Its ratings in mags and download sites are always maximum. I have tried Freeware Sygate Personal Firewall and Non-freeware Norton Personal Firewall (all reasonable alternatives), Freeware Agnitum Outpost 1.0 being just average.
Kerio Personal Firewall is very thorough because it intercepts EVERY eventuality, even one's ISP connection, and requests Permit or Deny. Other Firewalls, I find, are not this responsive. Some people might be irritated by such constant requests, whereas I feel assured by them.

get a hardware router
works better than any piece of software
wont slow your pc
wont kill your internet or email, when a dll or reg file gets messed with

linksys, dlink,smc
a few good names

PS if u get a wireless
make sure u enable the xtra security
so u dont get wan jacked...

There is a certain way to completely remove ZoneAlarm, without causing damage. Tried to find the link, which someone had posted covering safe removal of ZA via PCA search, but search facilty is not forthcoming!.
