XP workspace resolution problem

Hi, i have an XP Pro PC and im having problems with screen resolution. On 1080 x 780 its fine. If i up the resolution (make icons smaller) it just seems to make screen bigger an dyou have to scroll across the workspace to get to taskbar etc. The higher the resolution the larger the screen becomes, can anyone help?

I don't quite follow you.

Can you post any images to Image Shack please.

Or try explaining again.

Either you've reached your monitor's resolution limit, (it can't make the pixels any smaller so it just stretches your window off the edge of the screen) or your chosen resolution is the wrong shape for your screen type, 1024x768 (4:3) is more common.

When i try increasing display resolution, rather than reducing size of icons etc so creating larger workspace it seems to enlarge workspace which overruns the screen size.
The desktop becomes larger so it cant fit on screen and you have to scroll across screen in all directions to reach four corners.

Is that clearer?

Currently on 1024 x 760 trying to up to
1680 x 1050

What knid of monitor have you got please?

When you say "scroll across the screen" how are you doing that?

Is the desktop the correct size, but only windows that are too large for the screen?

I can't quite understand the concept of scrolling the desktop - it should just fit the screen - whilst windows can, of course be larger than the screen.

Screen is a 17" TFT monitor DGM. When you move the mouse the workspace moves about the screen.

Hi I have a 17" monitor they may vary but mine will only go to 1280x1024 must admit its not a TFT, what are you trying to achieve are you wanting to change the size of the icons.

The standard resolution for a 17" monitor is 1280x1024. You don't say what model, so I can't be any more certain than that - the actual figure should be in the manual.

Try it at whatever the mfr says is the native (standard) resolution.
