XP wont boot

Running WinXP SP2 on a Dell Dimension 5100. Today it will not boot up. The process starts, then stops early and message comes up: Fatal System Error C000021A. I tried to boot into safe mode but same thing happens. I pressed F11 to get Acronis recovery but Acronis says it could not find any hard discs (there are two) and error E0000101F4.
Luckily I have a second machine running Ubuntu so can communicate out.
I do have a Dell installation disc but that seems a last resort.
Any ideas as to how to get to safe mode at least to run system restore?
Thanks.

OK - put in disc, and went for Recovery mode but then it asked for Administrator's password. As far as I remember we never set any passwords deliberately to avoid just this situation. Is there a standard Admin Password or any way around this problem?

That's ok,if there's not a password set just press enter and carry on.

Thanks, hiwatt, that worked fine. Some progress at least. But I was then given a range of commands to enter at the command prompt that completely baffled me! I thought that 'Repair' would just scan through my system and repair anything wrong so that it would work again. Is there anything that will do as I want or am I looking at a fresh installation from the CD?

Fruitbat will be able to help you better here.If you have the windows xp you could do a repair install which will repair windows xp while keeping all your data intact.see click here
You could also try typing chkdsk /r at the command prompt and see if that sorts it out.

Just a thought, did you choose recovery console rather than xp repair install?
