XP will not shut down properly

  Flopper 21:57 22 May 2009

I have just wiped my laptop, a Dell Latitiude D630 by deleting and formatting the NTFS partition and reinstalling XP SP2 but now it will not shut down properly.
I am sure it did earlier and I am guessing it started since I installed all the Dell drivers.
The icons on the desktop disappear but it hangs on a blue screen with a white 'pointing' arrow visible.
I end up having to switch it off.
Any ideas?
