I am getting a new machine running with windows xp, I expect the new will be vista!, my question is can I load up my external drive with xp programmes and then put them back onto vista and will they still run , or will I have to have new programmes to run with vista??

You can't just copy them off your old XP installation - you need the original CD or download you made - then you install them into Vista.

Most will work - maybe even all - maybe not all.

Thanks for your comments, most are downloaded like pc mechanic, pc doctor, ect so I thought I could just put them onto the external then move them back into vista!

No,not unless you have the installation file for the programme

If you have the downloaded installation files then yes you could do as you suggest - so long as they are Vista compliant.

Some Software have newer builds released which give Vista support - check on the softwares or manufacturers website
