Just bought a laptop from a friend of a friend and on Administrator Screen/ Password:comes up with the following mesage:

You may be a victim of software counterfeiting. This copy of windows did not pass genuine Windows validation

Once into next screen,message reads:
This copy of Windows did not pass genuine Windows validiation and you have not yet resolved the problem. This copy
of Windows is no longer eligible to receive the full range of upgrades and product support available from Microsoft.

It's running XP but didn't get any software with the laptop, is there anyway I can get rid of this message or do I have to buy a new xp cd

Is there an OEM sticker with a product key on it?

Ask the "friend-of-a-friend"

If there is a sticker on case, have you tried the key on it?

If you ring Microsoft, they will probably help, even if it is counterfeit, they may even validate it for you depending how you got it.

I found them very helpful.
