My ability to download updates for XP home edition suddenly stopped a number of months ago. When viewing my download history the last thing that I updated was Security Update (KB839645) on the 5th August. !!!! I was able to update Service pack 2 from disk, however the problem has continued. All other downloading operates OK … It’s just the updates …. By the way my XP Home is an legitimate copy so it isn’t that . I have tried to download both auto and manually with no success

I don’t get any error all get is:-

Open Explorer and navigate to Windows/System32 and rename (delete) the folder Catroot2 to OldCatroot2. This changes the time stamps and makes Windows believe it has not tried to upload the updates before.

Type into CMD.

del /q "%SystemRoot%\System32\Catroot2\Edb.log

check your cryptography service is enbled. to do this look below.

to enable crypotgraphic services go to

control panel

performance and maintainance

administrative tools

then scroll down to cryptographic services. if it disabled do this

highlight the line then right click

go to properties
