XP starts up in 8bit colour

Since I installed Zone alarm I have to change the display to 32bit colour each time I startup.

This is not an answer, I'm afraid but a comment.

Any program that mucks up my system or interferes with the operation of any other program goes straight in the bin. There is no second chance for it.

Agree with €dstow, Zone Alarm made my PC crash a lot when I installed it, seems it's ok for some, but not for others. Try disabling it at startup to see what differenceit makes.
