Hi Our laptop has been slow of late in starting up. Now, just the desktop loads as normal but nothing can been activated including the Start button.
Placing the cursor over the task bar shows the laptop is doing something but it just sits there.
Also, none of the symbols( lan, avg, messenger etc) next to the clock load up.
Now the complete task bar is black showing nothing at all.
The laptop is an Asus A6M 1024 mb ram 80gb dual hard drive nVidia GeForceGo 6100 graphics.

Any ideas appreciated.

Try Ctrl+ Alt+Del

Does it say something is Not Responding?

you can you do reinstall of xp on the laptop. but first back up your files onto an external hardrive, i you have access to another computer there are some programs that clean and speed up the computer.

there is another program than cleans the registry up to ten times and then you have to restart it again

there is also gary glitters i can remember the website addresses or the proper titles

I have tried Ctrl+Alt+Del but it shows no applications are running.

will be a little difficult to clean the registry if no programs will run :0)

I suggest you boot to safe mode (tap F8 while booting) and do a system restore to a time before the problem occurred (if it will let you)

Sorry for the delay. Managed to boot to safe mode (F8) and restored to an earlier date. Restarted ok but now no desktop icons including "start" showing just the background theme.

Shut it down again then re-started via F8 and selected boot this time which brought the icons back but it's back to square 1 again, cursor showing busy on taskbar.

Any thoughts?

Restart in safe mode and run chkdsk.

Suppose you're running XP,click run then type cmd, then type chkdsk in the black box brought up where a flashing dash is.

See if there is any error messages, you may be advised to run chkdsk /f afterwards.

Ran chkdsk but no problems found. Not advised to run further check.

Also try this:

Control Panel/User Accounts, and click on Change the way users log on and off and untick Use the welcome screen, then reboot.

While still in safe mode, opened Avast which shows that Malware is found.

File name c:\windows\system32\aswlsvc.exe
Malware name Win32:Rootkit-gen(Rtk)
-:- type Rootkit
VPS version 100520-1,20/05/2010

Unable to move to Virus chest as server not running.

Can I delete safely?

  Fruit Bat /\0/\ 14:30 22 May 2010

Yes delete it.

Rerun Avast until clear then Start - Run -

sfc /scannow

to replace any missing or corrupt windows files.
