Hi, my sons pc will not start up.Windows XP SP2 1 gb ram 100gb disc amd athlon 2000 +. When turning pc on it looks like it will start properly then it says sorry windows could not start due to a problem. You are offered a series of alternatives to try, start in safe mode start normally, start at last known good startup. However which ever one is selected, nothing happens and it just scrolls around in a loop. One bleep is heard from motherboard when trying to start up. I know he has a lot of pop ups when pc was running o/k wonder if a virus etc is the problem ? Thanks.

If so: How up-to-date is it and when was it last run: Anti Virus, Firewall, Anti Adware, Anti Spyware, whatever. Which programs and which versions there-of, etc.

If you could fill us in on this we can work toward a solution.

Yes AVG antivirus and Windows defender also AVG rootkit cant tell you when they were last run/updated because it wont run.

Try in safe mode.[Just keep tapping F8 as the computer starts.]If it starts try a system restore to a date before he had the problems.

Pressed F8 and eventually came up with start in safe mode pressed entr then asked if Windows xp was operating system again enter. Windows xp page came up and then it went back to saying sorry windows could not start due to a problem, and offered differant options but nothing works.

Generally one beep from the motherboard indicates every thing is fine.

If there is an option to press F12 on boot up select this and run in utility mode, if there is a utility mode this may diagnose the problem.

Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
