Is there any truth in the appearance of an SP3 for xp soon ... I saw someone say this on a forum.

It's an unofficial patch put together by some enterprising individual. Microsoft advise to steer clear of it.

Sorry, there /is/ an unofficial non-Microsoft version, but it appears there will be an official one too. click here

Thanks .. after vista ... that's a long way off .... I can't understand why they can't bring out a "simplified" service pack, one that just bundles all the updates into a simpler format ... the article talks about vista being the focus ... but it wouldn't take a day's work to bung all the updates since SP2 into a self installing exe or CD, would it?

"but it wouldn't take a day's work to bung all the updates since SP2 into a self installing exe or CD, would it?"

But the testing would take weeks. Not every PC running Windows XP will need all the patches. Some will need patches others don't so you can't just apply all the patches to all machines like that. Also need to take into account some patches need to be installed in a certain order and some machines might have some patches already installed which might conflict if you reinstall the same patch again.

MS did do this back in February 2003 and was designed to cover 98 to XP, but by the time it came out it was already out of date and missing several more patches.
