XP shuts down and re-boots after CD ROM swap

I replaced the CD ROM drive on my home built computer when the stop/eject button failed.
The computer now starts up as far as the desktop then re-boots after a few seconds with no warning.

The OS is XP home edition and the bios has recognized the new Memorex CD ROM drive.
Could this be anything to do with Microsoft's policy on hardware changes?

I seem to have solved the problem myself!

I obtained an identical drive to the original and installed it. All appears well so far.
Still don't know why the Memorex drive would cause the problems it did.
Any thoughts?
