XP search routine very slow

The "Find file" search routine in XP Home seems very slow..
In Win 98 I used to simply type a word into the search box and the search was over within less than a minute, showing me the location of the file or telling me it couldn't find it.
But with XP the search takes a good 5 minutes and infuriatingly, it tells me "file not found" at the end of it even though I know for sure the file is on my system somewhere!
I hit Start> Search> All files and folders> Type all or part of file name> Look in C: drive> Hit "search"..
Am I doing something wrong?

Something wrong with that I think...

Have you defragged the drive recently?

How about running something like CCleaner to remove temp files and so forth?

As a general fix, try the system file checker

sfc /scannow

Have you also tried the "More Advanced" search options?
