My pc running win.xp home hung on shutdown so I had to switch off using the button. now when I start up it want's to scan my hard drive before loading, trouble is it only scans a percentage and then hangs I then have to switch off and on again, but it hangs on another %. I can avoid this and load windows by pressing any key to get out of the scan, this is annoying any advice please.

For XP it's CHKDSK

I Don't know what CHKDSK means border collie

CHKDSK is to XP what Scandisk was for 98 and ME.

Goto Start - Run and typr in CHKDSK, your disk will then be checked for errors.
