XP restarts when I press shutdown

I know this has been asked before and I did a search for solutions but it's still not working. Anyone got any fresh ideas or simple solutions. This is a new problem in the last couple of weeks, it used to shut down no problem but now it keeps restarting and I have to get to the plug in the wall quick before it does, so that I can switch it off. Help.

I have had the same problem for almost a year now and I have no idea how it started.
I also have no idea how to fix it!
Can anyone help?

I looked at the suggestions on the forum you directed us to. One suggestion was to change the ACPI stand by default state from S1/pos to S3/STR in the bios. I did this and it seems to be working fine again. Shut it down and hey presto it stayed off. Thanks again.
