XP repair install problem, no keyboard response

  Siberian Winter 14:48 22 Jan 2014

My daughter's PC (XP Pro SP3) has started to crash to BSOD on bootup. I suggested she do a system repair by booting from the installation CD-ROM. It gets to the point where it asks the user to press ENTER to commence XP setup. Nothing happens when she presses ENTER nor if she presses ESC to exit. The keyboard responded OK when it asked to boot from the CD-ROM. She has tried a different USB port for the keyboard to no avail. She has been getting messages saying 'low battery voltage', could be causing problems? Thanks for reading.

PC or laptop?

If PC, "low battery voltage" may be the CMOS battery dying, which could also account for lack of keyboard response when using a USB keyboard - using USB legacy for DOS from within the BIOS.

Rather than reinstall I suggest you first change the CMOS battery (easy on a desktop) batteries are usually CR2032 and cost a couple of quid.

Check the battery type before buying
