XP Recovery Disk

  MoiraB 11:07 15 May 2008

My daughter's laptop developed a fault and told her to use her setup disk. She has put the disk in the drive and restarted the computer but has got to the point where it comes up with C:\windows on the screen but no further instruction. She has no instructions with her recovery disk so has no idea what to do next. She tried hitting "enter" but that didn't work. Can anyone help please?

She's done that and has selected the option to Repair her installation but just keeps getting to the same point. It looks as if it is waiting for an instruction.

type in:- cd d press return (if D is the cd drive)
then if D: apears type:- dir and press return

this should list files - select setup or similar from there

That didn't work it says "command not recognised". She's also tried a, b, etc. in case her CD drive was one of them but no luck. Seems odd to me as if she switches on with the CD in the drive it asks is she wants to boot from the CD so it must be recognised. Sorry this is all being passed on third hand but she's at the other end of the country and I'm relying on what she tells me over the phone

Boot with CD in drive - when it asks if she wants to boot from Cd - say yes -then follow instructions

You say that she has reached the option to repair. When you reach 'To repair a Windows XP installation using recovery console.press R'. Do not ! instead press ENTER to continue with setup. It might be what is wrong. There is an option to repair or install a fresh copy later.

Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.
