Hi all

I have just been given a 2 year old pc with the genuine xp disc, however the case was replaced about a year ago which had the product key attached to it. As I want to do a clean install is there anyway of abtaining the product key from the disc

Thanks in anticipation

I should mention that those links require a working version of xp on your machine, they won't retrieve anything from an XP cd, ring microsoft

If you download Belarch it will get the Key of the Hard Drive if it's still working

Thanks so far for the replies, but the hard disc is dead so I have had to install a new h/d

Then you will need to buy a new XP CD with key

It seems a shame as I have the original (genuine Microsoft) disc but no sticker showing the product key

You can try telephoning Microsoft on 0870 60 10 100 and explain what has happened, but I do not hold out much hope. The disc is obviously OEM, and MS are not so keen on these versions being used on continuously upgraded machines. The case has been changed, and now the hard drive. The drive doesn't matter, but the case may well have invalidated your CD, and as Woodchip says, you will have to buy another full retail copy, which is not cheap.

You have nothing to lose, so give them a call.

PS the key is not on the CD

If you need to get a new XP CD, to my knowledge, this is one of the best deals - £57.47 inc. VAT for an OEM version without the need to buy any hardware.
