XP problems with DVD-RAM drive

  ragbag 18:02 10 Apr 2003

A while ago I purchased a LaCie external DVD-RAM – DVD-R drive.
It worked well with Windows 98 SE, although it took a while to get it
bedded in. Previous request for help.
However, after a much needed hard disc formatting, Windows XP Pro
was installed.
The LaCie works well with DVD-R, but appears to have no idea what
a DVD-RAM is. This is bad as all my files were carefully saved to RAM
I sent a longish request for assistance to LaCie, but they have not replied.

Any suggestions please………..

Dell Inspiron laptop 650 with 384 MB Ram
The device shows as a Matu*[email protected]:a LF-D310 when I try to format a new
disk, but it won´t carry out the formatting.
With a recorded disc inserted, My Computer shows DVD-RAM Drive E:
and gives space used and remaining, but will not open any files.

ragbag, after i upgraded from winME to XP i had to get new drivers for the drive.

apart from that it does behave differently in XP,in as much as instead of it being 2 drives (D-dvd-ram)(E-dvd-rom) its just one (D) that changes from ram to rom depending on disc.

try click here for a new driver.

I am not sure if this is where I should reply to crx16. I downloaded the latest drivers as suggested and overwrote the exiting files which were the same drivers in case there was some corrupton, but it made no difference.
I contacted Panasonic and they gave a one liner to try Windows formatting. This brought up the usual DVDform utility and I was able to format a new disk using UDF1.5. I can record and read from these disks.
The problem remains that the disks formatted in exactly the same way i.e. UDF1.5 in Windows 98 will not open in Windows XP. One disk opened on one occasion and the files were available, but stupidly I believed that the system had settled
so did not pull them onto the hard drive. Since then whatever I try they will not give up their secrets.
My Computer gives the correct information for the disk i.e. space used and available and all the other sruff, but I can´t access the files.

Any suggestions,

hi ragbag, i only use FAT32 for my DVD-RAM disks, which work fine for me in both winME and XP,

sorry the driver update didnt solve your problem.

i will boot into XP later on and maybe try formatting a disk as UDF1.5 in winME first.

is your XP on NTFS or FAT32?

well i formatted a disk in winME as UDF1.5 and saved a few files, but XP had no problem reading them.

maybe check the DVD with scandisc in XP,perhaps this could help.

or in the DVD-RAM driver run ODDIAG/'disc status' and 'read test'

also in DVD-RAM/Udftool, there are settings for UDF high priority.
