xp problems

I have upgraded my pc to xp and i'm having some problems with my modem. when i go through the set up for the modem it says that it cannot find my modem (ntl bb modem). the modem is connected via usb and the usb light is on the modem. if i unplug the modem xp plays that sound, it also plays the connection sound if i re connect it. i have my ntl installation disk and password.

i have left the modem as it is, connected up an old hard drive (with 98 on) booted up the pc and i can get on the internet (so i know the modem is working fine

can anyone think what might be causing the problems?

Is the ntl bb disc suitable for XP. When I have installed ntl bb in the past the disc was specific to the OS. If it is not specific, then I would uninstall the ntl software, unplug the modem, restart, install the software, then plug in the modem again - you will remember that when you first get your modem the usb port has sticky tape over it and the instruction to install software first.
