XP Problem

  Newbolt 16:35 28 Jan 2012

Hello - just inherited my son's Asus tablet[?] running XP SP3. Many of the folders are shown as empty, including the games folder, so games cannot be accessed in the usual way. Having looked at MS help the exe files for the games are still there, and can be accessed via the full file name. Remove and install programs - microsoft components - has the accessory box ticked. Would appreciate any advice and sorry in advance if this has been asked before.

Start - run type

sfc /scannow

sfc will run and replace any missing or corrupt files you may be asked for the XP cd.

May also have had a malware infection which has hidden lots of .exes

Try unhide.exe

Also Create a System Restore Point then Run a full Malwarebytes Free scan and make sure the Antivirus is working.

Thanks for these responses.Sorry for the delay - work intervened. Will try scannow, but machine has no CD drive. 'Games' is ticked, and malwarebytes installed. Will also have a try with unhide.exe. Will post Sun when done. Thanks again.

If nothing else works maybe untick Games and XP will remove it.Then after a reboot tick it again and XP should install it again.

Maybe ignore last and have a look here.

Sorry last one did not work unless you copy and paste it in the address bar.But this is what it says.

If you are talking about the inbuilt games in Windows XP then go to the following location and search for the games.

You will get the games there.

eg. look out for freecell, mshearts etc.

Copy the games from there and paste it in this location

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Games

If it's the Microsoft inbuilt games. Games may be ticked in first window but have you ticked the individual games to install in 'Details'?

Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs -> Add/Remove Windows Components (in left pane) and another popup window opens -> highlight 'Accessories and Utilities' then highlight 'Games' and click on 'Details', put ticks in every box of game you want and click on OK, and OK again. Then click on 'Next' and windows will install the games, Click on 'Finish'

There's a good chance that'll work B as it should rebuild the missing shortcuts.

Many thanks for the responses - very much appreciated. All MS games and MS calculator resored after finding the files in the C drive and moving them to the games folder. Don't know how they went adrift, but happily now back. Thanks again. Ian
