xp pro unable to format

im trying to install xp pro on to a new hard drive but i can only get to the stage win xp was unable to format the hhd this is the second new drive i have tried, different makes, same error message, could this be a faulty motherboard. hdd is detected on boot up. motherboard is an a asus a7v8x-x latest version.

Have you tried formatting from a bootable floppy, then installing xp.

i thought you had to boot from your d: drive to install win xp

Get a Win98se Floppy disc click here put a clean floppy in drive double click on download and it will create a Start Floppy disc. Now with the disc you need to start the computer and type FDISK Choose use large disc support and create a partition and make it active shut the computer off. then restart the comp with the floppy in and at a:\> type Format C:

What size hard drive - perhaps it's too large for the system BIOS?
