XP pro on top of XP Home

I have XP Home loaded onto my laptop and i want to upgrade it to XP PRO but when i put the disk into the drive it says that 'the version on this computer is newer than the version on the CD' it then says to restart and use the setup on the disk. The only thing is that i want to upgrade and keep all my files. Can i do that? Or is it a clean install?

Why do you want to upgrade?

For most users, the advantages of Pro over Home versions of XP are not worth bothering with so, unless you actually need the added security and whatever else that Pro gives, I wouldn't do it.

all i wanted it for was the 'offline files' because i use a small network with file server

It may be because you have sp2 installed?.
Not really sure,i dont know a lot about laptops,is it possable to set to boot from the xp pro cd in the bios (cd first)and install that way?,i dont know if doing this you will overwrite the current setup or just upgrade it.

It's likely that you have service pack 2 (or 1) installed on the machine, and the XP Pro is not as up-to-date re service packs.

Best bet is to create aslipstream XP Pro disk
